The Sagamore Resort is known as the quintessential "Great and Gracious" hotel on Lake George. The resort's elegant suites are the perfect place for couples to prepare for their day with friends and family alike. Couples can choose from rooms and suites in the main hotel or in the nearby private condos.

One of the most unique features of this resort is the ability to get married right on the water. Down the main staircase, the lower patio boasts 180 degree views of the "Queen of American Lakes" and ample room for a guest list of any size. Looking for more of a mountain view? Intimate ceremonies can take advantage of the third floor balcony, with its lake and mountain views of the Adirondacks.

As guests make their way to cocktail hour on the terrace, they can take in views of the narrows and take photos on the sprawling lawn. Your reception at the Shelving Rock Terrace is just as elegant as the historic hotel. Featuring draped ceilings, water views, and an expansive dance floor, this is the perfect place for the party of the year.

Guests may choose to have breakfast the next morning at one of the many delicious restaurants on property - or perhaps pop into the charming town of Bolton Landing for coffee at the well known "Bears Cup."

Nestled on the western shore of Lake George, this historic hotel exudes timeless romance, where the charm of a bygone era meets modern luxury. With its elegant architecture, breathtaking views and rich history, this lakeside resort invites you to immerse yourself in the beauty and tranquility of Lake George.

the historic hotel

The historic hotel is one of the few Adirondack "Great and Gracious" hotels left from an era of opulence on the lake. The hotel has been fitted with every luxury but still echoes its grand past - literally. Its said a friendly ghost can sometimes be spotted wandering the long halls.

Couples have many options for getting ready spaces in the hotel, but the lake view suites are our favorite. Boasting plenty of room for getting into the dress or suit, these suites make the perfect background for photos.

A FEW OF OUR MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT photographing WEDDINGS AT the sagamore resort

FAQ

Yes, the hotel offers a wide range of options for getting ready spaces - elegant rooms, spacious suites and homey condos. You and your partner can both get ready on site and never have to worry about crossing paths - until you want to!

Recommended ceremony times differ on the time of year you'll be getting married. In the summer, we recommend a ceremony around 4 or 5pm - the heat of the day will be lessening and the lower patio and upper deck both get a nice cooling breeze. Keep in mind that the later the ceremony time, the more cooler the ceremony temp will be (a 2pm ceremony in the summer is quite hot). If you are planning a winter wedding, you should plan an early ceremony at least 2 hours before sunset. With an early sunset time, you'll want to leave time for photos in the daylight post-ceremony.  Keep in mind that the Sagamore is on the west shore of Lake George - which means the mountains will block the sun earlier than "sunset time." Want a sunset wedding? Plan to have a first look and take your formal photos pre-ceremony so you don't need to worry about losing daylight for photos.

The Sagamore has many great options for family photos. If you are having a ceremony on the patio, its proximity to the pier and the great lawn make it easy to transition into photos.  I recommend family photos on the lawn, wedding party on the pier and couples photos on the docks and third floor terrace. This way you get to experience the best of the sprawling property.

There are many beautiful photo opportunities on property, so we recommend scheduling your first look at least 2 hours before your ceremony. This provides ample time to travel around property and get photos in all of the best locations. Setting the first look this early can also assure we'll have you tucked out of sight by the time your guests begin to arrive.

What better way to end the night than with a spectacular fireworks show? The Sagamore's location on the water makes it easy for the lake's signature fireworks barges to show up in secret. Once you're ready for the show, the great lawn is just steps from the reception and provides the perfect viewpoint for the fireworks. We won't tell you that you have to have fireworks -- but we certainly wouldn't be dissapointed!

We recommend scheduling at least 1.5 hours of time for portraits. This provides ample time for couples photos (about 45 min to an hour) as well as family and wedding party photos (20 min each). If you are not doing a first look, your formal photos will take place during your one hour cocktail hour. It is important to note that photos during cocktail hour will require the full hour (30 min couples, 15 min wedding party, 15 min family). To help with this, you may consider allocating extra time during your getting ready time to capture individual family and wedding party photos without your spouse. Alternatively, you can extend your cocktail hour to an hour and a half and join later on!

Here are several quick tips that help make the photos run smoothly:

- Keep the getting ready space clean. Set aside a space for wedding party belongings that is out of the way so you have a clean photo environment for photos. No one wants to see half eaten food and drinks in the background of a beautiful makeup photo. At the Sagamore we recommend having a separate room where you can get dressed in a clean space away from the wedding party

- Make a list of the family members you'd like in photos. Make sure to tell these people to wait to go to cocktail hour until after their photos have been taken. Remind them. And remind them......and remind them again. The Sagamore is a large property and so much time will be wasted if we have to find uncle Bob at cocktail hour.

- Make a simplified timeline for the wedding party and family. Provide copies they can refer to if they have questions about when/where they should be. They don't need to know when your florist or DJ arrives, but they DO need to know when to be ready for photos!

-Trust your photographer! We know the venue like the back of our hand and can make a plan to travel the property in the most efficient way in the timeframe provided for photos. We also know the best lighting in any given location at any time - we have a lot of location planning going on behind the scenes! Sunsets at the Sagamore are some of the best on the lake - so if we ask to pull you for sunset photos - do it!

-Let us take the lead on family photos. It may be tough but randomly calling out family combinations allows for too many cooks in the kitchen and only delays photos and creates stress. Discuss the photos you'd like with your photographer before the day and they will help you to make a plan. This is also a good time to discuss any family dynamics we should be aware of. Make it clear to friends and family that your photographer is in charge of the order of photos taken. Don't worry - we'll always double check we've gotten all the family photos combinations you'd like!

- HAVE FUN! It may seem obvious, but it's easy to get swept up in planning and coordinating on the day. Let your vendors take care of the logistics so you can relax and enjoy the ride. Plus, couples look the most beautiful in photos when they are happy, relaxed and enjoying one another on the day.
