A Luxury Wedding at The Sagamore Resort on Lake George

Bride and groom at The Sagamore Resort sunset with Adirondack Mountains behind them

There is a moment at every Sagamore wedding that I live for. It usually happens just before the ceremony, when the couple is still tucked away somewhere in the hotel and the guests have begun to take their seats on the lower patio. The lake is there — impossibly blue, framed by the Adirondack mountains, stretching north toward the Narrows. The sun is dropping toward the western ridge. The breeze off the water is just cool enough to be perfect.

And I think: this is why people get married here.

The Sagamore Resort on Lake George is, in my honest opinion, one of the finest wedding venues in the entire northeastern United States. I have photographed more weddings here than I can count, and I have never once arrived without feeling the particular excitement that this property produces in me. It is a place that takes the already extraordinary experience of a wedding day and amplifies it — through the architecture, the service, the landscape, and the singular quality of that Lake George light.

The Setting

The Sagamore sits on Green Island in Bolton Landing, connected to the mainland by a short bridge and surrounded on all sides by the Queen of American Lakes. The resort’s historic Victorian hotel — one of the last of the great Adirondack “Great and Gracious” hotels — rises above manicured grounds, a sprawling lawn, and docks that extend into the crystal-clear water.

For wedding photography, this property is a gift. The grand staircase that descends from the main entrance to the lakeside patio is one of the most photographically dramatic ceremony entrance moments I encounter anywhere. The lower patio, with its 180-degree lake views, creates ceremony backdrops that simply cannot be replicated. The docks and waterfront provide endless variety for couples portraits — the light on the water in the late afternoon hours is something I look forward to at every Sagamore wedding.

What Makes a Sagamore Wedding Unique

Beyond the scenery, what distinguishes Sagamore weddings is the quality of the service and the sense of occasion the resort creates for every guest. Couples who choose The Sagamore are investing in an experience — for themselves and for everyone they love. That generosity of spirit tends to produce a particular warmth and joy on the wedding day that shows up beautifully in photographs.

I also love that the property offers so much variety within a compact footprint. In a single wedding day, I might photograph getting-ready portraits in the lakeside suites, a ceremony on the lower patio, cocktail hour on the Shelving Rock Terrace, sunset portraits on the dock, and reception dancing under the stars. The Sagamore does all of it graciously and beautifully.

Tips If You Are Planning a Sagamore Wedding

After photographing so many weddings here, I have developed a few strong opinions about how to make the most of the day:

Plan your ceremony time carefully. The mountains on the western shore mean the resort loses direct sunlight earlier than the official sunset time — sometimes by an hour or more in midsummer. If you want golden light for your portraits, plan a first look at least two hours before your ceremony and use that pre-ceremony window for your couples session on the docks.

Do not skip the Morgan. The Sagamore’s historic tour boat, the Morgan, is available for ceremony cruises, rehearsal dinners, and post-reception send-offs. The photographs from the water — looking back at the resort and the mountain — are extraordinary.

Book the lakeside suites for getting ready. The light in these rooms is wonderful, and they provide beautiful, clean backgrounds for detail and getting-ready photography. The view from the windows is unbeatable.

Ask your coordinator about fireworks. The Sagamore’s waterfront location makes it one of the few wedding venues in the region where fireworks barges can appear as a surprise. If this is something you are considering, plan early — it is one of the most spectacular send-offs I have ever photographed.

A Note on Luxury Wedding Photography at Lake George

The Sagamore is a venue that rewards a photographer who knows it deeply. The best light, the best angles, the hidden corners of the property that produce extraordinary portraits — these are things you learn over years of working here, and they make a meaningful difference in your final gallery.

If you are planning a wedding at The Sagamore Resort and looking for a Lake George wedding photographer who knows this venue inside and out, I would love to hear from you. I accept a limited number of Sagamore weddings each year, and I bring every ounce of the love I have for this property to each one.
